Expresiones en inglés

A las expresiones idiomáticas en inglés se les llama idioms. Al igual que en español existe una cantidad innumerable y es bueno conocer al menos las más usadas, porque las escucharemos con mucha frecuencia y aunque, a veces, su significado se puede deducir, en otros casos nos podemos quedar con dudas. En esta entrada os presento una lista con 14 muy usadas que nos ayudará a completar las que ya aprendimos en otros artículos.

Spill the beans (irse de la lengua, revelar un secreto)

We can trust him. He never spills the beans.

Podemos confiar en él. Nunca se va de la lengua.

Bear in mind (mantener o tener algo en mente)

Bear in mind what I said to you, it´s important.

Ten en mente lo que te dije, es importante.

Barking dogs never bite (perro ladrador poco mordedor)

Don´t be afraid of him, barking dogs never bite.

No le tengas miedo, perro ladrador poco mordedor.

Be a piece of cake (ser muy fácil, pan comido)

His homework is a piece of cake, he will finish in 20 minutes.

Sus deberes son muy fáciles, acabará en 20 minutos.

Have a blast (divertirse mucho, pasárselo bomba)    

Saturday night I had a blast with my friends at the night club.

El sábado pasado me divertí mucho con mis amigos en la discoteca.

Go down the plughole (irse al traste)

I worked there for 5 years but finally everything went down the plughole.

Trabajé allí durante 5 años pero, finalmente, todo se fue al traste.

Hit the road (partir)

It´s getting late, I should hit the road.

Se está haciendo tarde, debería marcharme.

At the drop of a hat (en un abrir y cerrar de ojos)

He scored two goals at the drop of a hat.

Marcó dos goles en un abrir y cerrar de ojos.

Keep fit (mantenerse en forma)

She keeps fit going to the gym 4 times a week.

Ella se mantiene en forma yendo al gimnasio 4 veces por semana.

Get fresh with (ponerse impertinente)

After drinking two beers he gets fresh with everyone.

Después de beberse dos cervezas le falta al respeto a todo el mundo.

Lay down the law (imponer un criterio, ser autoritario)

He's the owner, that's why he lays down the law again and again.

Él es el dueño, por ello se impone una y otra vez.

Let's not go overboard (no exagerar)

Let's not go overboard, things are still under control.

No exageremos, las cosas están aún bajo control.

Hit the jackpot (tener mucho éxito, sobre todo, en lo económico)

He hit the jackpot the day he bought his house.

El día que compró su casa acertó rotundamente.

Beat around the bush (irse por las ramas)

It´s not easy talk to him, he always beats around the bush.

No es fácil hablar con él, siempre se va por las ramas.
